Germany requires employers to appoint trained first-aiders (Ersthelfer) under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (ArbSchG) and DGUV Regulation 1 § 26 — one first-aider for 2–20 employees present, and above 20 at least 5% of staff in administrative and commercial firms and 10% in production and trades.
Pedagogical staff in German nurseries and kindergartens (Kita) must complete an 'Erste Hilfe am Kind' (first aid for children) course under the statutory accident-insurance rules (DGUV Vorschrift 1) — nine teaching units with a mandatory refresher every two years.
Germany imposes a legal duty to rescue: § 323c StGB (unterlassene Hilfeleistung) punishes failing to help in an emergency, while § 680 BGB limits a good-faith rescuer's civil liability to intent or gross negligence.
Germany has no licence revalidation, but a documented continuing-education duty under SGB V/XI and the Nursing Professions Act (Pflegeberufegesetz, PflBG) — about 16 hours over two years — makes refreshing BLS/AED skills an employer-driven expectation checked during Medizinischer Dienst inspections.
In German care homes (Pflegeheim, Altenheim, Seniorenresidenz), the Länder-regulated care-aide programmes (Pflegehelfer/Pflegeassistenz) include or require a first-aid course covering resuscitation, and a recognized, up-to-date certificate is commonly required for training entry and by employers.
Full-time foster care in Germany is governed by § 33 SGB VIII; there is no nationwide statute mandating a first-aid course, but as part of the suitability check many youth welfare offices (Jugendamt) require prospective foster parents to attend one — often 'first aid for children'.
Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Germany, with the theory portion completed online; the initial course and two-yearly refresher include a hands-on in-person component delivered by an accident-insurance-accredited provider.
